SLCN Centre (Low COIN)
Specialist centres for Communication and Interaction Needs (COIN)
In Surrey, there are low COIN settings and high COIN settings.
Low COIN settings are for children with speech and language needs. This normally means the children are mainstream-appropriate, with specific speech and language needs. Children spend approximately 1.5 to 2 hours per week in a unit for speech and language therapy and potentially small group teaching, plus support from specialist teaching assistants (TA), but not 1 to 1 full time. Some of these pupils may have autism as well as developmental language disorders.
High COIN settings are for children with higher functioning autism and communication and interaction needs. Children will usually have an Autism (ASD) diagnosis and associated difficulties, for example, sensory/anxiety issues, social and/or communication difficulties.
In COIN centres, children have a differentiated school curriculum with access to the centre for more than 50% of the time in small groups. Children accessing the centres are of average to high academic ability.
At Bletchingley, we have a Low COIN Centre.
